Reception at 6 PM on November 19, 2013

Location:

USA, CA, San José State University, Art Building, 2nd Floor, Black Gallery

Description:

This is an altitude infographic simulation game.

The player plays as normal 50 miles tall girl who crash landed on Earth.  Unaware of her height for the planet, she must explore and find her items, which was scattered throughout the continent, before returning back to space.

The project is by Glenn Pham, a veteran of the Game Dev Club at SJSU members and developer of the prototype, Changuya, that won the Artistic Award during the SJSU x NeuroSky Hackathon @ SJSU.

Artist Statement

Altitude is an interactive altitude infographic simulation game.  The player plays as normal 5 ft tall girl who crash landed on Earth.  Unaware of her height is 50 miles to the planet, she must explore and find her items, which was scattered throughout the continent, before returning back to space.  Infographic are visual data chart listing most possible things in the altitude.  Simulation is the attempt to imitate of the atmosphere physics and distance.  Game is the possible interactions people can play with, it also include a goal determined by action available being the girl character.

Glenn Pham is a Digital Media Arts student.  He is also a veteran of the Game Dev Club at SJSU members and a developer of the prototype, Changuya that won the Artistic Award during the SJSU x NeuroSky Hackathon.  Glenn has interests in scientific exploration and playing with the idea of large scale.  We know there is stuff in the skies, but most of us are on the ground, because of our optical viewpoint, it is hard to determine how high aerial objects are and there are atmospheric phenomena that are rarely seen in the skies, such as the high-altitude noctilucent clouds and lighting sprites.  Glenn researches and gathers data of attitude related objects, including the speed of aircraft, the bolide of meteors, the height of mountains, the oceanic trenches, and more.

The girl character represents an average girl, who looks 50 miles tall to Earth's inhabitants.  Philosophically, being the scale of human had the presence and capability to change the planet's nature and the inhabitant.  Such as bacteria, animals, plants, and terrain have been changed by the scale of people's domestic presence.  What if there is another type of human in larger scale? Then what are we to them?  The scale relationship is inspired by Attack of the 50ft Woman (1993), Twilight of the Cockroaches (1987), The Twilight Zone “The Little People” (1962).  The color of magenta, pink, and fuchsia is Glenn's motif of powerful presence just as it is the most vibrant color spectrum.  This project is made with Game Maker Studio, while the art is done with Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flash.
